Glimpses of Hawaii

Hawaii is never far from my mind but has been in my thoughts since the weekend. I decided that for Travel Tuesday today I wanted to share some of the last photographs I took before leaving the island of Oahu. I wanted to capture some of the details of things I often took for granted of seeing every day during our years living the island life. While I did not capture everything I wish I had on photograph, I am so glad I took the ones that I did. How often do we live or travel somewhere and not take photographs of something simply because we see it all the time? It can be so much fun to just go outside and force yourself to see through brand new eyes and notice all the little things that make a place so beautiful and special.

I think the really neat thing about Hawaii is that each island offers visitors a unique experience! I’ve been to Oahu and Kauai and they were both very different experiences [also, those coconuts look mouthwatering]!!

  Oh yes, each island and then so many differenta areas of the individual islands can be so different too. I did not make it to the other islands, but on Oahu alone enjoyed the different areas. Honolulu and Waikiki I tried to avoid most often because of the amount of tourists. I lived in both Ewa Beach, Mililani, and Kailua during my time there, each very different. I loved that I could photograph on the beach, or in the jungle like forests, or get a city feel. North Shore and Haleiwa is my favourite place…so laid back and low key, and love the isladn life there.

The island I lived on in Malaysia was sometimes called the “Hawaii of Asia”…perhaps not the best comparison, I think Hawaii is much lovelier! But it’s true, when we’re so used to something we don’t necessarily remember to record what it’s like.

Gorgeous photos. Is it true that we take things for granted when we see them every day. I remember in the last few weeks of living in Hanoi (after 4.5 years) running around photographing everything as I realised just that, that i had been taking all the crazy scenes for granted. Until then I had mainly taken photos of friends visiting places or having fun and occasionally scenic shots when out of town, but Hanoi itself was just home and I didn’t take my camera out much. (This was well before the days of smart phones which have made photographing the everyday so much easire!) I am so glad I made that effort as I have a great photographic record that I still cherish 20 years on.

Was this a holiday or did you live in Hawaii? Great photos! My sister lived on the Big Island for a few years and of course I had to visit! Amazing to learn how difficult it is to be a white person living on the islands. It’s a whole different experience when you decide to move there vs. visiting. A beautiful part of the country nonetheless.

Truly stunning photographs. I really love the ones that show close-ups of tree bark and the forest. When people think of Hawaii, I think they dream of the beaches, but there is so much more there to explore!
