The Importance of Being Earnest – Bath Drama

20131119-BRP_0405sm

One of the fun things about being involved with a theatre group is attending script readings. Last night my theatre group, Bath Drama, had a rehearsed reading of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. As with the reading I was in last month (A Letter from the General), it was a rehearsed reading that the actors had prepared beforehand. Directed by Judith Howard, the cast of eight  brought the show alive with the farce and witty dialogue of Oscar Wilde.

“A trivial comedy for serious people. Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff are two men that are both pretending to be someone they are not.”

Q: “Have you ever read or seen the Importance of Being Earnest?”

I have never read or seen the Importance of Being Ernest. You have piqued my curiosity and since going to Ireland and seeing so many Oscar Wilde quotes {my favourite: “We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars”} I think I will give it a read. Looks like a wonderful cast ~ love your photos!

Oh do and let me know how you get on. :) I cannot wait to go to Ireland. Have you been to Paris to see where Oscar Wilde was buried? http://bonnieroseblog.co.uk/2013/04/travel-pere-lachaise-cemetery.html

        No, I have it on my ever-growing list of places to go see when I am in Paris. I am truly getting overwhelmed with all the places I want to see. Loved your post! I have quite a few cemeteries that I want to see in different places now. You will love Ireland and I can’t wait to read about your take on it {not to mentions your photos!}

Those lists get long fast. 😉 I really cannot wait. Our surname is Irish and I know how much my husband would love to go. His brother proposed to his wife there on a family vacation.

How wonderful! Brought back happy memories of my A’level in Theatre Studies where I did the duologue between Cecily Cardew and Gwendolyn Fairfax for my exam. It went really well and the examiner even got up to applaud – haha One of the best experiences of my life!

Oh how wonderful Molly! Did you play both Cecily and Gwendolyn? I love that scene.

I played Gwendolyn and my friend was Cecily. We really enjoyed practising it and performing it, although we were very nervous at the time! It is one of my favourite scenes too!

I’ve actually never seen it live – I love the Rupert Everett movie, as Hollywood as it is, and I went through a huge Oscar Wilde phase in high school, but I need to find a good local production to see :)

I will have to see the film, I have not caught that one yet. Hope you find a good production to see. Love an evening of theatre.

I’ve never seen it live either! We lived near a theater in DC and used to go to different productions every weekend. I need to find a theater here in Boston – I’m sure there are many.

Oh I bet there are…and what a perfect date night! Dinner and show. Would love to hear about which ones you see. x

ooooh! this looks great! I’ve never been to a dramatic reading. I love that you are involved in theatre! And I LOVE Oscar Wilde.

    • http://www.bonnieroseblog.co.uk/ Bonnie Rose

It was a lovely evening! Have you not Kolbi? You must remedy that soon. Check to see what local theatres or drama groups are close to you. I love Wilde too. We got to see where he was buried in Paris, I recommend you see it when you come to France. OR you can also check out my post about it: http://bonnieroseblog.co.uk/2013/04/travel-pere-lachaise-cemetery.html

I’d like to see a theatre production as I have only seen the film version of this, along with An Ideal Husband (which I love).

    • http://www.bonnieroseblog.co.uk/ Bonnie Rose

Oh you should when you can. It is so funny to see live. I will have to catch the film version and An Ideal Husband too.

My friends and I used to read through this play every year! It was such an awesome tradition. We started back in 6th grade, and did it all the way through high school! Such a great play!

Aww this a great tradition! I need to do something like that. So many funny parts in this play that just come alive when its read. x
