Gosford Australia

Welcome back to my new series for Thursdays on A Compass Rose called ‘Travel Throwback’.  Last week I shared a travel photo from my archives from Cambodia.   Today I wanted to share a photograph that I often use as a wallpaper for my desktop.  This is a photograph I took on a boat while in Gosford, Australia.  The time out on that lake was such a memorable one for me.   Continue reading

Photography: After the Storm

I have been looking forward to showing you the photos from my photo shoot, After the Storm for a throwback Thursday post.  It was a creative collaboration with my friend and model, Pua in Hawaii.  It was a conceptual fashion photo shoot that really spoke to me about the challenges and struggles we go through in life.  When we overcome the periods of darkness and the adversity, the healing that comes after the storm.  I also wanted to give another shout out to my model for this photo shoot because she brought so much to making it successful.  My favourite time to shoot is early in the morning after sunrise and she on top of it being early she put up with the elements.  Since we could not plan on a rain shower, I had my husband assisting with a water hose and the water was quite cold. This shoot really makes me miss doing a lot of creative work in my photography field and I aim to be doing more of this in 2014.  Here are my favourite photos from my shoot:

Revisiting the Peter Pan Statue 23 Years Later

It is Tuesday and you know what that means…Travel Tuesday! Make sure to link up with us all below and then have fun hopping around to visit the other travel and wanderlust posts for the week.  Next week I will announce our theme for the first Tuesday in November.  I was feeling a little nostalgic today and wanted to show you how traveling back to places we went to before can be so much fun!  The Peter Pan Statue in London is one of those places for me. It is great to compare not just how much I have changed but the trees around the statue as well. Time keeps moving and and still so many people come every day and take their photo next to this landmark in London.  We visited this summer while my family was in town for our Vow Renewal and took photographs to remember it by:

My sister and I lived in England when we were really little.  It was my second time to living here after being born in Oxford.  I cherish this photograph of us when we were little and since moving back have been longing to recreate the photo.  I attempted in 2012 but since Zoe was not with me it was just not the same.  This year we made it a mission to both be in London together to make it happen. We also got a photograph of the boys on the statue with their Zia Zoe too.  It will be great to see how tall they become as adults to recreate this image again!

Photography: The Beauty of Makapuu, Hawaii

For today’s throwback photography post I take you to Makapuu, Hawaii with my beautiful model,  Helene.  We decided to take to a concept that encompassed the surroundings, the earth, and nature.  With a colour scheme from the world around us we chose the wardrobe, picked up the accessories and props, and headed to the great outdoors in Hawaii. Helene was one of my models of the month for my project series in 2010.

What Vacation Photos Say about Family

I will be honest this started out as a ‘Travel Tuesday’ post but a talk this morning with my husband inspired me to change the photograph to the one above.  Which then made the post take a shift in gears to be edited and rewritten with a slightly different purpose.  The focus being how my travel photos showed me  what family is all about.

The photo above is one of my favourites from a vacation with my my family in the early 2000s.  My father was a child at heart and loved taking us to the Disney parks.  We have been to them so often through out our life in two different states and two different countries.  I took this photo because I loved seeing how happy my parents were and how much they loved Ryan as the son they never had.

To be fair every vacation with my family has been like the one pictured above.  To know that our time together is uplifting, encouraging, and memorable makes me realise what family is all about.  Coming from a family where I can count the extended family members on one hand, I always thought I was missing out from what a bigger family could offer.  Having married into a very big family, I realise now that it does not matter the size of your family it matters if there is acceptance, forgiveness, and love.

You do not have to question love. It is evident and present in the people who give it without question.  Raising kids who question everything it is comforting to know that when it comes to  my family that they only ask when my family is coming next and about what my dad was like in life. Fueled by so many constant wonderful memories with their Nonna and their Zia, I know that they will have such strong relationships with them as adults.  I have seen what can happen otherwise and that is just a sad truth.
It makes looking through the old photographs from our past vacations and visits so wonderful.  My photograph of my parents with Ryan at Disney is framed and displayed at our home.  I am just so glad that as well as taking a photo of Minnie Mouse and the Dumbo ride that I got a photo of what really matters. Family.
