Bath Christmas Market

One of the things I have been anxiously awaiting to visit this holiday season is a Christmas market. We went to the German Christmas market in London two years ago and came home with the fondest Christmas memories. I do not think we will get to London this year but it was our first time to check out the Christmas market in Bath, England. We moved to Bath on the evening of the 23rd of December last year and had just missed the opportunity to visit it before closed for the holidays. Days before the market was ready to be opened we were seeing all the signs of it being set up around the Bath Abbey. From what I had seen online I did not think it would be as big as it was and the stalls seemed to fit every little alley, nook, and cranny around the Roman Baths area in town. We even found glühwein to keep us warm as we enjoyed the evening of holiday cheer. I will say there were quite a lot of people also enjoying the holiday cheer as the crowds were thick. It did not stop us from having an amazing time and even meeting some great people.

We met up with a couple of Ryan’s work colleagues which made the night even more joyous as we could share it with family and friends. Our christmas gift to ourselves was buying in on the 3 bottle deal at the hot sauce stand. Since we love things spicy two of our three bottles was The End, the hottest one available and very tasty. My kids fell in love with a stand that boasted tons of tiny figurines each with their own personality and character. ‘Uncle’ Hugo bought each of my sons one for Christmas: Ronan chose a blue dragon and Maddox chose a black bat. I got a chance to talk to the couple who were selling them who are originally from Australia but have been traveling over here. While he drives she makes these creative figurines on a tray on her lap. I really loved all the Christmas ones she had available including the figgy pudding ornaments for the tree.

It was a lovely evening and I hope to keep checking back around the markets each time we are in town. There is something about being around the sights, smells, and sounds of Christmas that really put me in a great mood.

Portobello Road Market & Notting Hill

Travel Tuesday is here and since it is our first Tuesday of the month it means our themed post! November’s prompt is ‘relationships’. I love solo travel but I just as much appreciate the relationships I have when I travel with family and friends. On a recent trip to London with my visiting family we made the rush from where we were in Wales to get to the Portobello Road market. We were not sure we would make it in time and I am so glad that we did because we had a great time! While we were out I spotted with my camera this couple enjoying their relationship with a passionate kiss in the middle of Notting Hill. I had to recreate this romantic gesture with my husband and have shared the pair of kissing photos below.

I hope you will love the rest of these…there were just so many things to photograph and my eyes were on sensory overload. I loved all the silver and found the antiques and old cameras my favourite things to look at in the market. My sister, a level II sommelier enjoyed all the smells of the food stalls like the lush varieties of mushrooms. Even my sons found some interesting things to purchase while they were out exploring. If you have seen Notting Hill, the travel bookshop was in the blue ‘Notting Hill’ store front you see in the photographs. I definitely recommend making the point to go to this market when you are next in London and venture into Notting Hill. Fall has Begun

Fall is finally here and we are already enjoying the changing colours of the leaves. So much so we went out and picked a bunch of our favourite leaves from the ground and took them home. I had seen on Pinterest how you can fold the leaves to make roses and got busy constructing my own. Since Rose is my middle name (literally), I took photos to show you the Fall coloured roses. You can see them displayed above and I have included a photo at the end of this blog post.

To celebrate the season we went to a farmer’s market and a Pumpkin patch. My boys were so excited pick out their own pumpkins and gourds. It will be fun to decorate this week for the Fall holidays. With our wagons full, we left and headed over to Arthur, an Amish community. We picked up a bag full of apples from the orchards and spices to make our own apple pies. I have never made a pie before so it was a pretty big deal for me to try it this year. Thanks to one of my friends for a yummy crust recipe, I got busy with slicing apples. For those of you big on using coconut oil, I will let you in on a little baking secret. Instead of using crisco in the crust, I substituted with coconut oil. You just need to make sure it is in its liquid state, and not solid when you mix it with your ingredients. Otherwise your dough will end up lumpy. Though my pies do not look as beautiful as professional pies, they were the best tasting ones I have ever had. Proof that homemade is definitely more fun and more tasty! Hope you guys have fun trying your hands out at baking this Fall like we did.

With our left over apples we sliced them thinly and put them on a baking sheet. After sprinkling them with a little splenda and apple pie spice, we put them into the oven to bake for an hour on each side. The result: Yummy home made apple crisps! Yummy! My son, Ronan, really enjoyed making these and my other son Maddox really loves eating them for a snack.

This is one of my favourite photos that I took in Arthur, the Amish community. The breeze was making the laundry on the line dance and the sun was shining through the trees. Just a very beautiful scene.

Candy Canes in London before headed back home on the train.

Yesterday my partner and I took my boys to London for the day and I posted photos from when we played in the leaves. Here are the rest of the photos from our adventure out in London to experience the Christmas atmosphere. We started at the German Christmas market where we enjoyed hot cocoa that tasted like melted chocolate bars, ate yummy goulash soup from a bread bowl, and got to sample one of my favourites, German Rittersport chocolate. The boys were read for a lot of photo ops and so this blog post is quite picture heavy. I ended with our time at Hamey’s, the toy store in London and some of the beautiful Christmas lights seen around town. I hope you enjoy, as we had a lot of fun together in London.
