The Sunshine Award – Expat Style

[source]
I was tagged recently by Marielle Green for the Sunshine Award.  As a first time recipiant of this I really wanted to participate so have taken a week off from my Self Portrait challenge (to resume next Saturday).  Here is the general procedure:

  • Acknowledge the blogger who nominated you.
  • Share 11 random facts about yourself.
  • Answer 11 questions the nominating blogger has created for you.
  • List bloggers.
  • Post 11 questions for the bloggers you nominate and let them know they have been nominated.

11 Random Facts (of my life as an expat)

  1. I have not driven a car in a two and a half years, since moving abroad.
  2. I am technically a dual citizen living in the country where I am an expat.
  3. I have more books about travel, languages, or that take places in other countries than I do anything else on our book shelves.
  4. I get my food delivered to the house from local organic farms. Which means I’ve swapped waiting in long queues and maneuvering around busy grocery stores for cleaning the dirt off of my vegetables and enjoying raw milk.
  5. I do not like Starbucks.  I have never liked their coffee because I grew up drinking ‘real’ espresso in Italy as a teenager, and find the taste to come off like burnt coffee beans.  I find their drinks that contain syrups way too sweet.  With that said I used to go there all the time as our ‘meet up’ place with my military wife friends.  I used to love getting their ice tea in Hawaii but now that I live in England I would rather go somewhere for tea where I feel like I am treating myself to a nice day out with service that includes sitting down with a menu.  I will say I appreciate people who go there so much they bring their own reusable cup to help the environment.  I have my own Starbucks reusable tumbler from Hawaii that I still use at home.
  6. I dread package slips. Before expat life a package slip was exciting and it was followed by excitement over who it is for, who it is from, and what could be inside.  If I am excited now it is because solely it made it to us and did not get lost in the mail. However a package slip now means that it was delivered while we were out of the house and either too big to fit through the mail slot in our door or that it has to be signed for and so it went back to the post office.  While we have a post office on our high street in town, a mere five minutes away it is not where our packages go when they need to be picked up.  They go into town and that involves either a forty minute walk into town or I need to shell out the £ for bus.  A taxi is about £10 one way so to just pick up one parcel is not worth that option. So that is why I dread package slips.
  7. I miss my american sized dryer and being able to dry my clothes quickly. It is the one thing of my specific expat life that I would change if I could.  The last three places we have lived at here in England have had a washing machine (small like an american dorm sized fridge) but no dryer. Which means if it is sunny and warm enough we dry our clothes outside and if now we dry them inside. This involves clothes on our radiators at all times and on clothing racks that take up a lot of space in our house. The laundry is never completely finished and I find myself fantasizing about throwing in a large load of laundry in a dryer to have it dry within the hour.
  8. I never liked ‘domestic’ beer in the US but would drink imported beer from Germany or Belgium.  Here in England I still like a good beer or ale but I tend to drink cider more often.  It is my favourite weekend treat!
  9. I love planning new trip and journeys. At any time I have several trips in the planning stages. Some nearby in England and others in the world. I am looking forward to Christmas 2014 where my family has talked about going to Austria or Munich, Germany.
  10. I can always find new things to document and take photos of where I live in England. It makes being an expat always exciting especially living in a place that has seasons.
  11. I am fluent in English but have known Italian and German at different times in my life. I am now trying to work on German with my boys with the hope that one day I can say I am fluent in two languages.
The Interview
  1. What do you plan to do today? I am going house/flat hunting with my family as we are moving out of the place where we live this Christmas.
  2. What fictional character do you most identify with? Vianne Roche from Chocolat.
  3. If you wrote a novel, what would it be about? A group of people from different backgrounds who challenge the ways their societies have formed their worldview by the relationships they form with each other.
  4. What’s something your readers might not know about you? I wear glasses. I tend to not wear them when I photograph myself. One day I will go back to contacts again.
  5. What album could you play on repeat all day? It really changes every day as my music selection can be quite eclectic. However, Lana Del Rey and High Flying Birds has been playing quite a bit recently.
  6. What color(s) do you wear most and why? I am trying to wear more ‘Angelina Jolie’ inspired shades of monochromatic and neutrals with colour saved for special occasions or nights outs.
  7. Do you like watching crappy movies? Modern ones probably a no…but I love watching films from the 80’s and early 90’s that I watched as a kid.
  8. What’s your favorite for a good laugh? Captain Ron with Martin Short and Kurt Russell.
  9. Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Both.
  10. Opera or musicals? Both.
  11. Classic films or classic lit? I like to read the book first.

A list of bloggers I have tagged for the Sunshine Award. No worries if you are busy or have already been nominated.

Liebster Blog Award

Let me start by saying a big thank you.  This weekend I was nominated for the Liebster Blog Award by Casey at True Colours blog. Thank you Casey for thinking about me and for nominating my blog.

The Liebster Blog Award rules:
  1. Each person tagged must share eleven things about themselves.
  2. They must answer the eleven questions the tagger has made for them.
  3. They must then choose eleven fellow blogs to nominate.  The nominees must have under 200 GFC (Google Friend Connect) followers and be told in a comment on their blog.
  4. Lastly they must then think of eleven questions to ask the bloggers they have decided to nominate.

Eleven things about myself:

1. I am a dual citizen because I was born and lived in England to American parents.
2. I am a Third Culture Kid (TCK) because I lived in many different cultures and countries outside of my parents’ home culture during my developmental years as a child.
3. I have gone through cycles of eating strictly vegetarian  vegan and raw food.  For the last year and a half my husband and I have been keeping our family on a more Paleo path, concentrating on protein and vegetables.
4. I have broken my left arm on four separate occasions but the last time I was in 8th grade.  Knock on wood I am done with broken bones for this lifetime.
5. I grew up participating in community theatres and majored in theatre at University.  I am still very passionate about acting and directing.
6. I used to do horseback riding as a child in Italy.  Two Christmases ago my husband got me the gift of  getting a new riding helmet.  I hope to get back into it someday.
7. I love to write and I am working on a novel.
8. I love doing photographic projects. While in Hawaii I did a fashion photography project with models of the month.  Last year I started a Self Portrait project and I am starting it again this year.
9. I live by the notion that life is short and time is precious.  I lost my father in 2007 in a cycling accident when he was run over by a car whose driver was driving under the influence.  There are some things completely out of our control. For me, my family time is the most important.
10. I am Hairstylist and make up artist trained in airbrush makeup and hair extensions.  It is something I got into back in 2003 and what got me into pursuing photography professionally.
11. I am currently only fluent in English though I know enough to Italian to travel in the country, enough German to eat, and various words and phrases in French and Thai.  With moving so frequently as a child and going to school with english speaking  students it was not as easy to keep languages that I picked up.  However as my bookshelf can attest, I am always eager to keep learning!
Questions for me from Casey at the True Colours blog.
1.  If you could be anything, what would it be?
If I could be anything, I would love to be a companion to the Doctor and travel in the Tardis.
2.  If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
I would love to live in Austria.  It was one of my favourite places to vacation as child growing up and I am always craving Germknödel
3.  Where were you born?
I was born in Oxford, England and have dual citizenship with USA.
4.  What is one of your hobbies?
I work as a photographer but I also take photographs as a hobby.  I am hardly ever seen without some sort of camera on my person.
5.  Why do you blog? I have blogged since 2005 and my answer since that time has probably evolved over time.  As of today I blog because I love it and I love making new friends.  I have never been one to think that you cannot build a life lasting friendship online and have several to prove otherwise.  I do love sharing and writing, but if it was not for the friendship aspect I do not think blogging would be as fulfilling.
6. Where is your favorite place that you’ve ever been? Oslo, Norway was always been the one childhood memory I draw on when asked that question.  I went tPhnom Penh  Cambodia a few years ago and would also have to add that to my list. Both places made a lasting impression and would warrant return visits from me.
7.  What is one major goal you have for yourself this year? This is the first time in my whole life that I do not have to move, nor have an impending move to another country on the horizon.  My goal for 2013 is to work on establishing roots for my family here in Bath, England so that we can then again focus on traveling around the world.
8.  Is there 1 thing you wish you would have done as a kid that you didn’t? I do not like to live with regrets, everything is circumstantial and I believe certain doors open or close for the right reasons.  However I do wish I had the means and the know how to take more location specific photographs and journal better and more consistently   I had such a nomadic childhood and memories fade.  I would love to be able to pick up a scrapbook and say here I am at such and such and show you a photo and then turn to the next few months and show you where I was at that time.  Now a days with digital cameras, smart phones, and social media apps make it so much easier to document.  I am working with my own boys (5 and 8) to document the world around them for their own memory books.
9.  What is your favorite month of the year?  I really love three: November, December, and January.  I love all the holidays, birthdays, and family activities that fall around that time period. We also celebrate a lot of cultural holidays from different places in the world where I have lived and so its a very cultural enriched time at our house.
10.  What is the most important thing you hope to accomplish in your lifetime? To have continued to raise a wonderful family and see my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  That our family just grows and continues to be a family that loves to travel and is open to new cultures and ways of doing things.  I really believe that is one of the best lessons you can teach the younger generations.  I have seen too many people in the older generations that have sadly missed out on that fact.
11.  In one word about yourself, what word best describes who you are? Passionate.
Eleven “Up & Coming” Blogs that I Nominate:
(in no specific order)
Robyn at A Dash of Robyn
Tali at Rock My Heels
Erica at Being Erica
Olia at Love Olia

Here are my eleven questions for all of you:
1. In one word about yourself, what word best describes who you are?
2. Where were you born?
3. What would be your dream job?
4. If you were handed boarding pass to fly any where in the world, where would you go?
5. How would you describe a perfect morning?
6. Why do you blog?
7. Would is something you have never done, that you would like to try?
8. What childhood memory still impacts your life today?
9. What is something many people do not know about you?
10. If you could go to any time period which would it be?
11. What would you like to accomplish in your lifetime?

Note: If you were nominated and do not want to pass this on and keep it going, no worries.
Thank you for the nomination!

Boys getting older and moving up.

My boys left recently with my in-laws to go back to the USA for seven weeks this summer.  I will be joining them after I get back from my trip with my partner to mainland Europe. It will be 11 years since I have been back to my home in Napoli, Italia where I grew up twice for a total of 6 years.  As much as I cannot wait to go back home and that I hope it does not go by too fast, I am really looking forward to seeing my boys again in three weeks.  We have had to be apart in different countries or continents four times over the last seven years, and it does not get easier. Things can be quite loud at home when you are raising two boys, but after about 4 hours of silence it has been too quiet.  I miss them so much.  Going to look back over their last week here in England and highlight the best parts of our time together.

As you might remember we went bowling in May for my 5 year old’s birthday party.  We had a great time and the boys have been wanting to go back ever since.  They got that chance while Bob and Sue were here and the boys got to show off their bowling skills.  Ronan brought his a game and his competitiveness and really showed us up.   Its been crazy to see how much they have been growing up over this year so far.   Both boys have really pushed forward in their reading for one thing. Maddox went from not reading at all in August to now he can read from chapter books. After finishing our latest Harry Potter book, both boys were in need for summer reading.  We used their gift certificates from school to get them some great choice reading about dragons and samurai.  The boys are also moving on up in their groups at bible class over at our church.  This past sunday was their last day until they get in September. Maddox will be moving into Ronan’s class and Ronan will be moving up to the next class.  They are both excited about the move up.  I signed us up for a church retreat for when we get back and I hope they will have fun on the weekend trip.  We saw the baby ducklings on our walk home and the boys were telling me how big they think they will be when we get back.  It has been fun watching them get bigger since our first time finding the babies.
The last day the boys were here we went to the store so I could get them proper hats for the hot summer awaiting them in the USA where temperatures have been in the 100’s (F).  They look really cute in them, but they look so much older when they wear them. It does not help that I gave them hair cuts before they left for the summer. Ronan maintained his style, but Maddox wanted a big change. He wanted batman shaved into the back of his head. We might try that this summer.  When I asked Maddox what he wanted he said he wanted hair ‘like Ronan’ and when I use my ‘hot thing that makes it straight’.  So we went shorter to help keep his curly hair maintained.  The boy has a lot of hair so I basically took it short on sides and back and on the top I did not really take off any length, just took out a lot of weight.  So hes got a lighter and more trendy look. Which makes him look older.
I let the boys sleep in our room on their last night and it was hard to sleep with listening to them sleep so sweetly next to me.  I even woke up before my alarm set for 0430.  It was hard to get up, but I wanted to make sure I made them a proper breakfast.  The boys were dressed in the outfits I laid out and finished with their breakfast before their Papa even woke up. I definitely take from my dad with getting ready in the morning.  With the extra time I took the boys outside to take some last photos before I see them again. They were so cute for it being so early in the morning.  I think Ronan took it hardest when they drove away, and I basically almost threw up outside for all my neighbours to see after they left.  I think the anxiety just really drove the nausea.  Luckily I ended up feeling better in a few hours. But my heart still hurts. I miss my boys so much.  With having them apart before, I really do not like nor want to have to be apart from them ever again.  3 weeks.  I can do this.  Ronan and Maddox, mummy loves you so way much!

The InLaws Visit

My boys have been counting down the days for weeks until their Papa and Mimi come over to England.  The day finally arrived last week and there have been smiles all around.  The first full day the boys got to show them around their school as we went in for the award ceremony.  The boys met me at work on Friday and we went out for smoothies afterwards.  We spent the afternoon painting and played games together.  On Saturday we took the boys to Crawley to see the new Spiderman film and it really exceeded my expectations.  We had our first mexican meal in over a year at a nearby restaurant in the town.  What was really interesting inside were the chandaliers. A few were made from old spoons and one from old bottles.  I posted photos from the below. Sunday the boys and I walked into Lindfield for church.  We got to see the little ducklings and they are just as cute as ever.  Unfortunately the English summer rain caught us in the downpour.  Monday we decided to go see Bodiam castle and there we were greeted by hoards of ducks.  They were quite cute and we had fun feeding them.  Another creature I found was a fuzzy little bat sleeping on the castle wall inside.  It was quite cute.  On the way back we decided to take a detour to the beach in Hastings.  The weather was so cold and it made me miss the warm Hawaiian sun.   We caught up with the rain again on Tuesday, this time in London.  We went to the British museum for most of the day and I think the highlight for me was the Picasso exhibit.  The boys really enjoyed seeing the mummies.  While on the subway we were right next to the actress from Doctor Who (and ER), Alex Kingston, who plays River Song.  No photo unfortunately to share but it was another highlight of the day.  The boys enjoyed playing on the pirate ship at Hyde park while it was not raining.  It has been a good first week.  Just one more week left with the boys before they head over to the US.  I am sure it will go by way too fast. :(
