Photo Shoot in Bavaria, Germany

Hi everyone!  My name is Brittany Ruth and I blog over at The Rococo Roamer.  I’m so glad to be posting at Bonnie Rose’s blog today!  She’s been such an inspiration for me.  I currently live in Bavaria, Germany with my husband and French Bulldog.  I’ve been living here for over a year now and I’ve traveled to 10 European countries so far (and counting).  Traveling Europe is a big part of what I blog about.  But, I also like to blog about my antique and flea market adventures.  I love finding treasures in hidden places all over Europe.  I am also passionate about my photography journey that I have started since moving to Germany.
When I found out I was moving, I knew I wanted to document every amazing travel adventure, so I knew I had to start getting more serious about the pictures I would be looking back at for years to come.  More recently, I signed up for Bonnie Rose’s introductory course, B. In Focus, from her line of B. Lux photography courses she has started offering.  I began learning how to use my new camera in manual and wow does it make a world of difference.  For my final project with Bonnie Rose, I decided to try my hand at portraits.  This is something I’ve always wanted to try but never really thought I could do.  The images below are a photo shoot I did back in November in my small town in Bavaria with my beautiful model, Kaija. These are also my first attempts at portraits.  I’m slightly obsessed with the images because they tell so much about my life right now and what I blog about.

As I said, the images were all taken around my tiny little town in Bavaria.  There is so much visual inspiration for me to draw from.  I found inspiration in the abandoned building with the red door and textured exterior.  I discovered some old benches with pops of red and brown that add interest to my photos.  I used the back drop of my town with a yellow building that happens to be the priest’s house.  And, I used ivy to frame my model’s face.  All of these images are staples of the town that I now live in and have grown to love.  The blanket I used in the first picture is from one of my flea market adventures to the Tongeren, Belgium Flea Market.  I love adding bits and pieces of the past into my life.  I’d love it if you stopped by and checked out some of the other things that I blog about at The Rococo Roamer.  Cheers!

Double Rainbows – Bath, England

Double RainbowDouble Rainbow

On a country walk recently it began to rain for a bit on our way back home. With our rain jackets and wellies we did not let a little rain spoil what had already been a wonderful afternoon in the English countryside. Upon entering our town we were greeted with an amazing site of a double rainbow. I have not seen rainbows like this, so vibrant and beautiful, since we were living on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.  I loved photographing rainbows when we were living the island life.  Since my father’s death in 2008,  seeing a rainbow has always reminded me of him and his Aloha spirit. He had been on my mind so much during our walk and in my family’s conversation that day.  As a Third Culture Kid (TCK) in our expat life, feeling so connected to my dad in the country where my life all began feels like the closest thing to ‘home’ that I can describe.  The previous rainbows that we have seen in England in the past year have been on our 10th Anniversary Vow Renewal in Wales and when we returned to Bath with my mum after our summer travels in August.  In a way I feel like he is watching over us.

Double Rainbow

 From my Ohana to yours,
may this week be filled with wonderful reminders
of just how wonderful and beautiful life is around you.

Q: Have you ever seen a double rainbow? Do you connect on a personal level with them too?

TCK: Where are you From?

ACR_WhereAreYouFrom

Knowing where you are from is part of your self identity.  It is also the way others can form initial impressions and gain an understanding to who you are upon your meeting.  For many this is an easy, quick to answer question that requires no premeditated thought. For some it may take a little time as they have moved around, but upon further investigation will find they have a ‘family’ home through their family relations. Then in walks the Third Culture Kid (TCK) who may love or loathe this question for there is no real simple answer. Do you want the short version or the long version? How many more questions will you ask depending on the answer I give? How will you label me if I bring up certain places? Will you stop listening when my answer goes past two words?

I became a TCK because I grew up in a US military family that moved around military bases overseas. Not all my peers had the same extreme nomadic lifestyle that I did growing up.  They may have spent two years or maybe six abroad but returned ‘home’ to a semi stable lifestyle stateside.  I on the other hand have lived some places for a few months up to a few years (though never more than three) over and over again. If I were to go off the typical reasoning for being ‘from’ somewhere I would be without a country/city/state/province/town to hold as my own. As a TCK I hold each significant place that I have spent time in as a part of who I am.  Perhaps I only lived in that place for 3 years but it has now become one of my ‘homes’.  I am a citizen of the world and I am proud of all the stamps in every passport I have.

freqaskedQ

Where are from in the US?
Technically I am not. I was born in England during my father’s second tour (out of three) with the US Air Force.  I moved to the states at seventeen after growing up across military bases in Europe. I spent the next eleven and a half years spending several months to a few years living in various parts of the United States, including three summers abroad to Italy, Australia, and Thailand.

Alright but where is your family from in the US?
My dad was from Newark, New Jersey. He left at 17 to go to the USAF Academy and moved frequently for his work until he retired in Arizona. He is survived by a younger brother but I have probably only been to NJ less than ten times in my entire life. My mum had a nomadic life within the US as a church planting kid and I never knew her extended family either. While we have relations in the US, there is no grand family home to return to for the holidays.

When your husband was in the military, where were you guys stationed?
We were in Monterey, California for close to 2 years and then on the island of Oahu in Hawaii for 3-4 years.  We were blessed with ocean side locations during our six years as a military family. Hawaii is now the longest place I have lived anywhere in the US.

Where have you lived in Europe?
I was born in Oxfordshire, England and also spent a few years in Norfolk during the first gulf war.  Then I lived in Stuttgart, Germany in between two separate tours to Naples, Italy.  Three years ago this coming May we moved to Brighton, England and we moved to Bath a year ago this past Christmas.

What brought you to England this time around?
When my husband and I were engaged at Uni we had plans to move abroad to Europe.  He joined the military in hopes we could get overseas assignments like my father.  While Hawaii and California were great, when my husband finished his enlistment we decided to move on.  My husband started a masters programme in England and with my dual citizenship we left the US to start a new life for our family.  We now work and live in Bath.

Where will you move next?
We have no current plans to move.  This is the first time in my entire life I have not had to think about moving in the near future. The historic city of Bath is beautiful, quite safe, and a lovely community with picturesque countrysides surrounding it. We can now plan towards the future and look forward to future events here with our family.  I know that may seem like a lot coming from someone with such a nomadic background.  However, I have never felt as happy or as content as I do now.  It solidifies our decision to leave the US to see how happy my whole family is here together at last.

The Bridge Tea Rooms in Bradford on Avon

The Bridge Tea Rooms | Bradford on Avon

Welcome to the first #TravelTuesday of 2014 and I am so glad to have you on board!  Today I wanted to share with you another one of my favourite places in the nearby town of Bradford on Avon.  The Bridge Tea Rooms and Restaurant is a must stop place on your next trip to the Bath area.  From the quintessential setting, to the lovely service and dining experience you will find you’ll leave wanting to come back again soon.  Nestled near the river you can walk over after feeding the swans and be greeted inside by the waitstaff in traditional attire.  We have chosen to sit upstairs every time we have visited the Bridge Tea Rooms and on a cold day it is lovely sitting by the fire.  They have a wide selection of teas to choose from though I have to admit I love the Jane Austen blend the best!  Are you coming with children?  They are family friendly and have some great selections to keep the young ladies and masters content.  My sons had their tea of sandwiches and fruit brought on on a three tiered plate stand and enjoyed milkshakes with their food. Make sure to leave room for dessert or perhaps come for tea and cake.  For me it is reason enough to make the trip to Bradford on Avon. It is a perfect place to go before or after a stroll through town and the picturesque countryside.
