Self Portrait: ‘To the Music’

Another Saturday is upon us and that means it is another edition of Self Portrait Saturday. This is a reflective piece about my current view of life.  A portrait of myself inspired by my father’s view of living life and enjoying life to its fullest.  We are inherently never in full control. We can no sooner control life’s outcomes than we can control the weather.  Sometimes this lack of control can cause people to try to control people around them.  Be it to modify their world views or force people into the same mold of how they envision life should be.  Feeling we cannot control our situations some people are quick to judge others around them or point out every moment where something is out of place, not right, or goes wrong.  Life should not be forced. Nor burdened under the weight of guilt passed on from one to the next.  Life should be full of passion. We may not be able to control the song, but we can choose to dance.

Photography: The Spitting Caves of Hawaii

For today’s throwback photography post we head to the exquisite Spitting Caves found on Oahu, Hawaii. My model for this shoot was Tasha Woodfall, my make up artist Melissa Hurley, with hair and photography by myself. While the three of us had not all worked together before I had been Tasha’s hair & make up artist on shoots with two different photographers and Melissa and I worked together frequently during our time on the island. We tailgated at the parking lot of a near by Starbucks to do hair and makeup before heading to the Spitting Caves. I had seen this place in photographs before and as one of the sets used on LOST, but this was my first time seeing it for myself. While it is nice to location scout before hand, walking out here was like taking a child to a candy store. My eyes were wide open as my head looked around and my mind thinking of all the shots I wanted to get while we were there. While we did have to work around a few tourists that showed up during our shooting, we pretty much had the location for ourselves. I just adore the way the layers of the rock shone beneath the sun, the colour of the ocean, and the way the water did ‘spit up’ against the caves. It was on my list of places to shoot before I moved and I could not have asked for a better team that morning. I hope you enjoy!

Q: Have you ever been to the Spitting Caves? Have you ever been Cliff Diving?
(I ask because that is one thing I have never done before)

Self Portrait: ‘Inside the Frame’

I am back with the Self Portrait Saturday challenge!  This is where any time during the week you take a photo of yourself with any camera that you own and share it with us on Saturday.  My self portrait this week is entitled ‘Inside the Frame’.  No underlining conceptual themes or trick photography involved in this shot.  I was getting ready to go to my expat friend’s house for tea and had a few minutes to play around with my camera and the window light while waiting on my sons to get their shoes on.  So here I am in my H&M lacy peach dress, my hair back in a chignon, and wearing my brown frames.  You normally do not see me wearing my glasses in photographs.  I used to be a girl that loved living life through her variety of colour contacts.  However I need a new contacts and have a deep love for my oversized prescription sunglasses.
I do not mind being photographed in my glasses and to be fair love the look of me in my frames.  However I will be honest with you.  I am that girl that quickly grabs the frames off her face and hides them behind her back in a photo op.  Eyes are the windows to the soul and sometimes I just want to see that without the distraction of glasses.  It is interesting how much different someone can look with our without glasses on and so in lieu of keeping my blog grounded in authenticity here is my self portrait with me wearing my glasses inside the frame.

Photography: The Beauty of Makapuu, Hawaii

For today’s throwback photography post I take you to Makapuu, Hawaii with my beautiful model,  Helene.  We decided to take to a concept that encompassed the surroundings, the earth, and nature.  With a colour scheme from the world around us we chose the wardrobe, picked up the accessories and props, and headed to the great outdoors in Hawaii. Helene was one of my models of the month for my project series in 2010.

Il Cimitero delle Fontanelle [Travel Tuesday]

I had lived in the city of Naples twice for a total of six years before I went back to visit last summer.  As life would have it one of my military wife friends from Hawaii was now stationed in my hometown.  I had so much fun getting to visit with her in a place that meant so much to me.  The highlight was having her show to me some aspects of bella Napoli that I had never experienced before.  One of which was seeing the Fontanelle cemetery, which until recent times had been closed off and private any visitors.
The Fontanelle Cemetery is an ancient cemetery located in the Sanita district in Naples.  It gets its name because of the presence of water sources back in ancient times.  The cemetery includes 40,000 body remains that were victims from a the plague in 1656 and cholera in 1836.
There is something known as the ‘Pezzentelle’ which had provided people with the ability to adopt and placement of one of the unknown skulls which then ‘corresponded to a soul abandoned in exchange for protection’.   Which is why you will see many skulls in the photos below not apart of the mass pile but decorated or put in special boxes.  It was a really interesting sight and I really enjoyed getting to see it.

Self Portrait: ‘North Wind’

There is a line taken from the film adaptation of Chocolat
that as a Third Culture Kid it truly speaks to my nomadic nature.

“But still the clever north wind was not satisfied.
It spoke…of towns yet to be visited, friends in need
yet to be discovered, battles yet to be fought”
I am a free spirit that feels blown to new places.
When you have yet to ever live in one place for longer than a three years,
you wonder if you can ever truly settle down.
Since I have only been in my current location since Christmas,
we will just have to wait and see.
Where do you think I be in two and a half years from now?
