250 Words of a Nomad

Today is the first day of May and with it commences the Blog Every Day in May challenge.  Feel free to join in and if you catch this anytime through out the month feel free to just jump right in.  I will be posting my normal posts, so you get a special treat of two different posts for each day this month.

Day 1, WednesdayThe story of your life in 250 words or less (or one paragraph… no one will be counting your words… probably)

I was born in Oxford, England to American parents who were on their second overseas tour in Europe.  This would not be their last as I grew up moving around military bases in Europe until I was seventeen years old.  My childhood was highly nomadic as we were always moving.  I have lived in a place for as little as a few months and as long as three years at a time.  Hence I can never easily answer where I am from and still have yet to settle down.  I have learned a few different languages growing up and traveling abroad but I am still only speak English fluently.  I met my husband at Uni in the US.  We were college sweethearts and married while we both still in school.  We then embarked on the life as a military family adding two children along the way for the next six years.  We got really ‘tough’ assignments of Monterey, California and Oahu, Hawaii.  However life made up for life of paradise by experiencing the sudden loss of my dad and followed by a near divorce in my marriage.  Through it all we finally made our way to Europe in the summer of 2011 and have been living the Expat life ever since.  My husband and I are more in love than ever and will be renewing our vows this August on our 10th Wedding Anniversary in Wales. This is just another chapter in our story called life.
Second to my camera, my pink laptop is one of my favourite accessories.

Are you a ‘No Reply Blogger’?

Self Portrait on timer by Bonnie Rose Photography © 2013 All Rights Reserved | www.bonnie-rose.co.uk

When I first started blogging in 2005 this was not an issue. The only people who commented on my blog anyways were family members.  However at the start of this year when I became involved in the blogging universe I was told by another blogger that I was a “no-reply blogger”.  To which I responded in my head, ‘–a what? What is that? How do I fix it?’ After a quick search on google I realized that even though I would comment a ton on all my favourite blogs, my account was not connected to my email address.  What that meant was the owner of the blog could not reply to my comment.  I was glad to know that my comments were not being ignored.  But that sort of defeated the purpose of building a conversation and starting a relationship with another blogger.

Are you a a no-reply blogger?
I honestly had no idea I was one and I have already helped others in my same situation.  But tracking down every single ‘no reply blogger’ can be time consuming.  I love getting comments because I love getting to know other people. Some readers will leave the sweetest comments on my posts. I get excited and look forward to replying to their comment…only to have my heart sink.

How do you know if you are a no-reply blogger?
It is really easy. Go comment on your own blog. The email you get will either have your e-mail address or this: noreply-comment@blogger.com. Obviously if it has the later you are a ‘No-reply Blogger’. This is what I look for now before I write back nice thoughtful replies to comments, before they get lost in the blogger abyss

What if you do not change your settings?
Its fine really and as you read further along  you will see that this is more pointed towards bloggers who use blogger and not another blogger platform.  However I try my best to respond back to comments on the blog where it is a ‘no-reply blogger’.  I just dont know what the actuality is that the blogger will return back to that post to see if I replied, since there are no options for notifications to blog comments. I spent a lot of time reading and commenting on blogs never to hear back from the bloggers before I found out about this issue.  Which is disheartening because the blogging community should be a two way street of sharing, reading, commenting, and creating dialog and friendships between people. It is why I blog.

How do you connect with your readers?
Change your email settings.  It seems easy enough, however when I was trying to do this myself with having Google+, I realized you kinda have to work around the system by deactivating Google+ first.  You can find all the steps below:

For Google + profiles, visit Rachel’s post and for regular blogger profiles, visit Emily’s post.

Okay but what if I use WordPress, Typepad, Tumblr, etc and not on Blogger?
If you do not blog with Blogger than there are two things you can do.  One is you can make sure you have a Google+ account if only for connecting with the bloggers who do use Google+.  Its security settings seem much easier for me to than the ever changing ones on Facebook.  Set it up and then just have it so that other bloggers can respond back. Or actively use it. The choice is there.

Otherwise make sure to leave in your comment your email address or a link to your blog (where your email address is easy to find) so that if you comment on a blog, the blog reader can reply back easily. You can read Sandi’s experience with being a ‘no-reply blogger’ and the problem being the Blogger platform.

I hope this helps clear things up.  I try to respond by email to all my comments and then go back on the blog and reply to those who are ‘no-reply bloggers’.

Cheers,
xx

Top Ten List for Expats with Kids

I recently wrote a top ten list entitled, ’10 Things Expats Raising Children in England Should Know’ for the expat blog network Expatsblog.com for their March ’13 Contest.  For just a couple more days you can go read my entry and help by commenting and sharing the post on various social networks.

I have posted just a little sneak peek here, but you will have to go read the full list on their website.

10 Things Expats Raising Children in England Should Know

  1. Depending on the age of your children and how long you will be living in the country, you may be raising Third Culture Kids, or TCK for short. Find out as much information on the subject as you can. American sociologist David C. Pollock coined TCKs as “a person who has spent a significant part of his or her developmental years outside the parents’ culture. The TCK frequently builds relationships to all of the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. Although elements from each culture may be assimilated into the TCK’s life experience, the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar background.”
  2. Expect that your children will face some sort of culture shock in England, even if you are moving from another english speaking country like the United States. Culture shock does not necessary happen immediately and can differ between individuals. Prepare your children for the tough times so that when a situation arises you can meet the challenge with comfort and flexibility.
  3. Realize that your kids may transition faster in a country as a child than you will as an adult. I had lived in England as a young girl, but with raising two boys in school over here found them to adjust quicker to life in England. My boys would correct my word choice or even my pronunciation of words from the ‘American’ to the ‘English’. Kids are quite resilient and impressionable when taking in a new culture and learning the laws of the land.

Bristol Fashion Week – Spring Season 2013

I was very honoured to be chosen by British Style Bloggers for the ‘Day in the life of a catwalk reporter’ competition.  This was my first fashion show to attend here in England.  The last fashion show I attended was Tucson’s Fashion week in the US  and covered fashion shows in Hawaii while I was living on the island as a fashion photographer.  I really enjoyed being able to compare my experiences with Bristol Fashion week while getting to meet the other fashion bloggers.  Since I have relocated to England I have noticed the differences between street fashion of women in England compared to what I have seen in America.  Women wear a lot more denim and jeans in America where as here everyone appears to have a signature style.  Be it a good or bad, it is their style.  It is hard not to be inspired when among the other fashion bloggers at BFW with their personal style choices.  I love how women in England take more chances with fashion and really grab from what is current on the runways of London, Paris, and New York.   I left with not only new friendships but with new ideas about what to wear for the current spring season from what I saw on the catwalk and on my fellow bloggers.

I loved seeing how they transferred looks from the runways to the high street as they showcased looks from stores within the mall at Cribbs Causeway.  The show began with the James Bond theme and men looking dashing in monochromatic suits.  I was instantly hooked as I photographed from a prime location at the end of the catwalk.  For Men’s wear my favourite looks were from Austin Reed and River Island. There were a lot of prints from monochrome to colour, but my favourite were the  french inspired prints from Marks and Spencer.  Between those dresses and the retro swimwear from Fat Face I have been motivated further to go on vacation in style.  The children models truly stole the show with their dancing down the catwalk in Next and Gap Kids.  They were all looks that were perfect for those of us who shop the high street to implement for our own personal style for 2013.

I leave you with one question.
What will you be wearing this Spring and Summer?

They began with James Bond music, dancers and men in black tie.

Fashion Bloggers at BFW

Yesterday I brought you some sneek peeks from my camera phone
from the Bristol Fashion Week live bloggers show.
Today I am showing you a little bit of what it was like
being there with the other fashion bloggers.
Tomorrow I will touch on the fashion from the runway.
Stay tuned for my feature article at British Style Bloggers
on Bristol Fashion Week Spring Season 2013.
I have only been in the Bath area since Christmas.
So it was really great getting to meet bloggers from the area.
Better yet, getting to put a face to a twitter handle and blog.
Everyone was really friendly and I really enjoyed getting to meet
Fritha of Tigerlilly Quinn and Laura from Side Street Style
It was interesting still to see how the runway show here in Bristol
compared with Tucson Fashion Week in Arizona
and the many fashion shows in Waikiki, Hawaii.
In all the excitement there was something very comforting
about being back behind the camera at a fashion event.
Make sure to check back tomorrow for more about the fashion
that we saw on the runway at Bristol Fashion Week 2013.
